Diet deficency or something else?

When I was a baby (under 2) my parents moved from New England to Florida. Within a month, they had to rush me to the doctors with water like blisters all over. They can no longer remember what the doctor said was wrong except that he changed my diet from powdered milk to whole milk and it cleared up.
I now moved from New England to New Mexico and for the last 2 years had no problems with the heat. But for the hast week have broken out in water blisters that burst and leave sores that heal slowly. I learned the hard way that covering them with bandages is the worst thing I can do. (they get infected and burn) Mostly I find tem in covered areas ( between the breasts, on the chest, belt areas and the ones that get infected where the thighs come together.)
Anyone got an idea what can cause this and what to do to prevent and heal. Tea tree oil keeps it moist and it gets infected. CS dries it up but scabs and causes the healing to scab quick and be delayed.

elderberry and sage

I've been taking elderberry tincture for some time now - I find it seems to give me amazing energy. But I'm wondering if it's OK to just keep tkaing it as an ongoing thing? anyone know if there's any problem with loongterm use? I want to start making my own elderberry tincture but don't know if there's a specific kind of elderberry to use? I have finally at last started a medicinal herb garden for myself, and want to plant an elderberry bush, but want to make sure I get a variety that is efficacious medicinally speaking. Same for sage. There are so manhy varieties! And I am not a botanist. I planted several kinds of sage (mexican, spanish) and then realized I don't know what kinds do what. Anyone got any info on t5hat?

Anyone with a weak stomach, please stop reading here.

I have been having a real problem lately. I'm loosing weight (and at 112, I really can't afford to) because I can't hold anything down in the morning.
During the day, when I'm up andaround, I can clear my sinuses fine. But, when I first get up, my alergies have clogged my sinuses so bad in my sleep (not in the nose but in the sinus cavities themselves) that when I get up, they start to drain natually. This has me blowing my nose alot and spitting up. So much so that it gags me, and I get physically sick. So much so that my bathroom and I are very familiar before I've been up a half an hour.
Because of this, I have no appitite (sp) and even the thought of food makes my stomach turn. In turn, I get sicker, more quickly.
Please, I've ended up in the hospital before, having lost too much weight, any suggestion on what to do when I first get up to stop this. (mint type teas haven't helped, only increasing the acid in my stomach and most other things I've tried, if they have odors get me sick quicker. Lemon helps some, but not enough.)

Herbal Cough Syrup...anyone have any TNT recipes?

I am still miserable after three weeks of coughing. This started as what I thought was my yearly allergic reaction to the trees blooming but seems to have become something more. Most of the time I don't feel like I have a cold per se...just miserable because the tickle in my throat doesn't seem to respond to anything. I have tried over the counter cough syrup, cough drops, honey, tea with honey and lemon, stinging nettle and I know part of the reason I'm not feeling better is lack of sleep. I have sleep apnea so my cpap machine just aggravates the cough at night because of the air blowing through my sinuses non-stop. At first the mentol cough drops helped control the cough at night as long as I kept one in my mouth all night long but they don't seem to be working any longer.

I'm hoping someone out there has a really strong herbal cough syrup that will work on this.

Favorite Backwoods/Weed Remedies

I've noticed that the most powerful medicine I use tend to be those from right around me. While exotic herbs shipped from Nepal or China have their place and I'm glad they're available, it seems important for both ecological and personal reasons to have a deep connection with the plants we primarily use. I was thinking of posting of some of my favorite local herbs and thought maybe some of you folks would care to do so as well. I'll include brief descriptions of usages with mine, they are far from complete though, just providing a snapshot of the myriad uses of these common and powerful plants.

1. The Sages are perhaps my favorite and most used plants, I use local native Sages (Salvia subincisa, Salvia greggii, Salvia azurea), as well as the ones I grow in pots and my garden (Salvia apiana, Salvia officiniale, Salvia coccinea). A top rate wound and burn remedy, great for toothaches and gum disease, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant, cooling and assisting with hot flashes and hormonal imbalance, it also calms upset tummies, works on many headaches & migraines, is a gentle diaphoretic when ingested hot as well preventing sweating and loss of bodily fluids when taken cold... I could spend my whole practice studying just Sage!
I also wrote a post about the Salvias on my blog http://medicinewomansroots.blogspot.com/2007/01/salvia-plant-teacher-for-grounding.html

2. The Rose is another remedy I often turn to. Great for hot, inflamed conditions, I often use rose petal vinegar for burns and sunburns and the salve or dilute tincture on wounds of all kinds. Many indigenous tribes considered the entire plant a primary wound remedy, and used the petals, hips, bark and/or root on all manner of infections, stings, bites, and other wounds and burns. Internally, it's very calming and soothing, and I consider it a specific for women who have been abused or betrayed and feel great rage, powerlessness or closed off from their own emotions. Rose is especially strengthening to the heart and pelvic area, protective while also gently stimulating the flow of both energy and blood. Great for PMS in Pitta types (actually, it's great for nearly any Pitta disorder), and for hot, congested cramps used either externally as an oil or salve or internally. It's also an effective relaxant for inflamed, overworked livers. It also provides lots of hormone building blocks, and so assists with balancing out of whack hormones.

3. Elder is perhaps the best anti-viral immune herb I've ever used. Taken in half dropperful doses every 1-2 hours at the start of symptoms, it almost always eradicates the virus before it can get started, it also works great as a preventative and general immune modulator. Studies show Elderberry to be an effective adaptogen, helping to mediate side effects from severe stress, balancing the immune system and supporting the whole body. I've used it this way for years and find it remarkably effective. Typically classified as a simple diaphoretic or as an herb to be used for cold/flu, Elder has a huge range of uses. It also works great as a blood tonic and relaxant nervine, I also employ it frequently for nausea, upset stomach and headaches, especially in children. Berry or flower or leaf makes a great liniment or salve for wounds and infections and rashes. the Flower is an amazing diaphoretic, especially in children with fevers that just won't let go, but continually spike and drop, spike and drop... herbalist Susun Weed describes it as resetting the fever mechanism, it does this so well that I also find it works well for consistently overheated menopausal women. I keep more Elderberry and flower tincture/syrup around that any other plant, with quarts and quarts of the stuff stored on my shelves. I've also seen it radically help weakened lungs, though I'm not sure of the mechanism in this case.... and i've used it with children who's immune system has been weakened by chronic bronchitis or pneumonia. Elderberry or flower vinegar is a tasty and effective way to ingest lots through food (lovely salad dressing) and for external use for sunburn, rashes, and other hot irritated skin conditions. Oh, and Elderberry is brimming with wonderfully healing bioflavanoids which help strengthen the mucus membranes, assisting in the prevention of infections (including sinus infections, yeast infections and general allergies). I always include a bit elderflower/berry in my nose sprays and eye drops and allergy formulas. Besides, the fairies love it! I also wrote a piece on Elder http://medicinewomansroots.blogspot.com/2007/01/elder-mother.html

Ok, there's my top three, if this thread gets going, I'll be happy to add some more plants to the list...

alternative plants for smudging in New England

I have recently learned about the wonders of this Native tradition, and have some questions for folx.
I would like to harvest my own herbs to smudge with, but i unfortunately live in WesternNewEngland, where no white sage grows at all.I just cant stomach the idea of buying another cultures sacred plant wrapped in plastic from a Newage store as a consumer product anymore.
Can anybody sugest any other herbs i might be able to use for clearing spacethat are local to this bioregion, especially ones that would have been used by my Euro ancestors?
As for the obvious. There is a little sweetgrass here, but the local Natives guard its locations very scrupilously from Non natives and i want to respect their wishes as i am not Native .Also the species of cedar here i can find(Arbor Vitae, i think, the one used for landscaping) burns wrong and doesnt seem effecatious at all.
Ive heard that Juniper is used by some indiginous peoples(Siberian shaman,Sumerians,Bon i think as well ect) as well as mugwort (used by medival european herbalists as a fumigant to "banish demons"..sounds like smudging to me) both grow local enough I can probably find thembut ive found that they also burn weird(juniper especially it flashes instead of smouldering).I also recently learned that rosemary was used instead of frankincense when the catholics couldnt get it, but cant get it to burn right without charchol.
Any ideas to help with my culturally appropriate spring cleaning?

anyone interested in getting involved, as a teacher, financial supporter, or conference attendee, check em out at www.sevenarrowsfarm.com/Calendar.htm .
need suggestions / opinions: body broke down - Pls look at

Hello,

I just got out of the hospital this morning for the 2nd time and would like to get some suggestions on what I can take to get over this.

Friday I was having a scale 15 on a scale of 1 to 10 headach and pain all on my right side. It was so bad I couldn't even put my fingers through my hair without being in absolute pain. The hospital said it could be a sinus infection but gave me a spinal tap test and it came back clear so they sent me home. They gave me morphine and a prescribtion for amoxicillin which I cant get until the clinics open on Monday.

The morning I woke up again in bad pain but just loaded up on flexicil and 400 mg Ibrophofen. weak but pain was mostly gone

This morning I had a full blown asthma attack and the pain was back too. So again they gave me morphine and prescribed predisone which again I cant get until tomorrow.

I'm trying to find a ride to Wild Oats (Orgainix market) to pick up some kombucha tea is there anything else I can do / take to get this (whatever 'this' is) out of my system?

Hi, I just made a new tribe about bears, because there aren't any. I made it about 10 mins ago so it's a pretty lonely tribe. I've seen many black bears in the wild over the years; esp. near berries (and birdseed). If you like bears, and other critters, here is the link:

Natural Spermicide

I found a page with a natural spermicide the other day, one made up of mostly lemon juice with corn starch and honey added. I guess it works by raising the acidity level of the vagina thus killing the sperm.

What I'm wondering is, how effective could this be?

And, does anyone know of any other natural spermicides or male contraceptives?

I won't use a chemical spermacide again, it burned both my boyfriend and I when it started killing the sperm. Hurt for several hours, actually.

I hope this is appropriately posted.

hey all...

well, its always interesting to see what takes over the garden. i have a little plot in a community garden here in Vancouver.

Well, this years winner is: SAGE. I have ***so much*** sage and I need to get rid of lots quickly to make room for other plants.

what can I do with it? I dont' want to just ditch such a sacred plant. but... seriously!

please give me some suggestions...

thanks~!

So, other than the obvious, St. John's Wort, any suggestions for some herbal therapy for depression?
This is a mild level of depression, but more chronic then "o crap, my girlfriend left me/dog died."

However, it may be too mild to be medicated with typical pharms such as Zoloft, and in any case, my friend would rather not take a handful of pills every day. He already deals with prescription migraine meds.

i am a chai baba, and brewing chai for everyone keeps me strong and healthy. ancient medicine promotes well-being. chai spices are warming, energizing, invigorating and anti-viral. perfect for winter. great for digestion. excellent aromatherapy. added bonus: many of the spices in chai are excellent aphrodesiacs!

don't buy oregon chai! it's mass produced, loaded with sugar and not at all healthy for your body (or the planet).

look for a local chai to drink, blend your own spices together or visit our website www.heartsongchai.com.... our web site has LOTS of good info. on the spices we use and their medicinal properties.
Advice on Regional Medicinal and Edible Plant listings

I'm putting together a display of medicinal/edible herbs for the Shambhala festival this year.

I'm looking for recommendations for plants to be included in the display, to be included on lists to be distributed regionally for sample collection. I'm mostly concerned with the Pacific Northwest, the coast and interior of BC, and the southern Prairies of Alberta, although I'm considering plants from any bioregion.

Any links to online resources or personal suggestions would be appreciated.

Remember, this is a good chance to introduce a lot of people to the wealth of vegetative resources in the natural world, who might otherwise never know about them.

wildcrafting in urban/ suburban areas

I am an aspireing herbalist in a small city in central/western Massachusetts(northampton).I love how many herbs I can find growing in"waste" areas, like by traintracks, roadsides and abandoned buildings,or in vacant lots. I am wondering if there are any guidelines as to maximizing the saftey of what I am gathering from these"polluted" areas(many are semi industrial/brown zones ect)How much danger am i in from, for instance gathering dandelion/ clover./sorrel leaves from a vacant lot by a road,or raspberry leaves from a nearly defunct train tracks?
I know that plants can bioaccumulate environmental toxins, but how different are these plants from, say, the inorganic plants most folx are eating in a grocerystore(at least my wild harvested greens dont have pesticides on them)Are there differences in what kind of plant bioaccumulates what chemichal where it its body?
.
I have few other reasources other than these for finding herbs,so what else is a brother to do?(especially without a car in suburbia)
Access to "clean" sources of wild/ferral medicanal and food plants is becoming more and more scarce, and for many people it is a matter of privelage to have acces to clean sources of these things at all.
my origional questions also apply to urban reclamation and guerrella gardening as well,as the soil where these things occur is often questionable.
thankyou all for making this community possible

Hello everyone and thank you very much Talisunbrow for inviting me to join the tribe. I have a question about sinusitis ..can anyone reccomend some easy herbal remedies for treating and possibly helping prevent these occurunces? I've been trying gargling with a mixture of sea-salt and cloves that i've pulverized in a mortar and pestle this seems to be helping somewhat especially with the pain .

fire cider

i came across fire cider in the forests of oregon with a bunch of anarchists and hippies
but it works great and it's sooo tasty yum yum!

it's kind of like a tincture
1/4-1/3 solids
the rest apple cider vinegar

some ingredients used for fire cider solids:
jabenero peppers
jalapeno peppers
black pepper
white pepper
varieties of allums i.e. red onion leeks chives
garlic
osha root
licorce
nettle
dill

let sit for a week and strain and press all the yummmy spiciness out
take anywhere from 1 tablespoon to a whole cup or more of it a day!
it'll kick any kind of flu, cold, sore throat out the door

anyone else use anything other herbs in their fire cider?
xo

what other common drink also achieves this same thing?

Okay, smartypants...Do you know what fruit has the opposite affect of these 2?

Schools back in session, I'm taking classes that have the intelligence level of second grade comprehesion, don't know if its the locality that I am in or if I know to much to be in College, hmph go figure, but the interesting thing is, there is an interesting connection, I am taking an ancient story class ,the first book i must read is, Troy and we all know its about Achille, the other class is Plant biology, we just draw plants here, the other class is wild flower I.D., easy one too seeing that I already know all plants in this area anyways, but get this....we drew from a bowl on the flower of our thesis, mine came up Yarrow! Yarrow is my #1 plant of knowledge and its latin name is Achilles Millifolium, and to further the coincedence other than Troy,it has massive amounts
of minerals that I need for my back and other internal things such as.....

Magnesium, calcium and phosphorus function together in bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve transmission. The high content of these minerals in yarrow makes it a useful candidate for muscle spasms, muscle weakness, convulsions and lack of coordination.

So this has got me a little weirded out in a way, but also points that I'm on the healers path again...so i hope every ones doin well..luv ya all

My 14 year old daughter is experiencing soreness with her tonsils. Currently their just swollen and she’s taking antibiotics. Is there a natural remedy that will help her heal the problems so she won’t get worse and have to have them removed?
